FDA Investigating Testosterone Replacement Therapies for Risk of Heart Attack, Stroke, Etc.
The FDA is investigating the risk of heart attack, stroke and death in men using FDA approved prescription testosterone products. A study by the National Cancer Institute and a study published in the Journal of The American Medical Association (JAMA), in November of 2013, prompted the FDA investigation. The studies showed that three months after beginning "low-T" treatments with testosterone therapy drugs, the risk of heart attack doubled among men over 65 and younger men with a history of heart disease.
Testosterone Replacement Therapy Side Effects:
- Stroke
- Heart Attack
- Death
- Pulmonary Embolism
- Deep Vein Thrombosis
- Coronary Artery Disease
The only condition for which testosterone therapy is approved is hypogonadism, a disorder that causes severe testosterone deficiency. The increasing sale of testosterone gels, injections, and pills in recent years indicates that the drugs are being overprescribed. In their labeling and advertising, the manufacturers of these testosterone therapies failed to warn of the risk of heart attack and stroke as possible side effects.
