DePuy Orthopedics Recalls Its ASR XL Acetabular Hip Replacement and Resurfacing System

Due to a high rate of revision surgeries to correct or remove defective implants, DePuy Orthopedics has recalled its ASR XL acetabular hip replacement and resurfacing system.  These revision surgeries are painful and expensive and recovery often takes as long as the initial hip surgery.

DePuy was alleged to have known that the cup had design problems, but did not warn physicians.  In a letter to doctors in March of 2010, DePuy warned of a "higher than expected" failure rate in traditional hip replacements, especially in smaller patients or those with weak bones.  Depuy discontinued the cup and phased it out at the same time.

In August 2010 the FDA accused DePuy of improperly marketing its Corail hip system and stated it lacked clearance or approval to market its TruMatch Personalized Solutions System.
