The FDA Recall
The FDA has issued a Class I recall (the most serious class of recall) on Zimmer Biomet Comprehensive Reverse Shoulder replacement devices due to increasingly high fracture rates. The FDA is warning that the Biomet devices are fracturing at a greater rate than stated in the manufacturer’s product labeling, increasing the likelihood of serious injuries for patients who have received the shoulder replacement device.
About the Zimmer Biomet Shoulder Replacement Device
The recalled shoulder implants were originally placed in patients who wanted to restore maximum arm movement after injury from torn rotator cuffs, those suffering from severe shoulder arthritis (arthropathy), and those who previously had a failed shoulder joint replacement. The recalled Biomet shoulders were distributed from October 2008 - September 2015, but could still have been used in total shoulder replacements through late 2016.
Zimmer is being forced to recall the device because of increasing instances of failure, particularly reports of fracturing. After the shoulder replacement fractures and fails, the injured patient may require painful revision surgery that can lead to complete loss of shoulder function, loss of feeling in the shoulder, infection, and even death.
