Avastin Not Effective In Treating Breast Cancer
September 9th, 2010
AvastinĀ® (bevacizumab), is the world’s best-selling cancer drug as well as one of the most expensive, sometimes costing patients $100,000 per year or more*. Although many women suffering from breast cancer have relied on the drug to help treat the disease, an FDA panel recently determined that Avastin is not effective in treating breast cancer. In addition, recent studies** show Avastin significantly increased the risk of kidney damage for patients.
About Avastin
The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Avastin be taken in combination with a specific chemotherapy regimen in 2004. The approval was based on studies that showed the drug may extend patients’ lives by a few months. Upon further examination, it has been shown the studies were flawed.
Avastin & Breast Cancer
Avastin was approved by the FDA in 2008 for use in metastatic breast cancer. The approval generated controversy as the advisory panel for the drug objected that while it slowed tumor growth, it failed to extend survival. An FDA advisory panel has recently recommended that the FDA withdraw approval for the blockbuster drug to treat breast cancer.
Increased Risk of Kidney Damage
In addition, doctors are finding increased instances of kidney damage, especially in patients with renal cancer. The danger is so great that many doctors are advising their patient to discontinue the drug until levels of protein found in their urine are reduced.
Roche should be held responsible for complications caused by Avastin that have led to kidney damage in patients taking the drug.
