Genectically Modified Rice Litigation
August 12th, 2010
These cases arise from the contamination of the long grain rice crops in Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Arkansas and Missouri by a genetically modified rice (GMO) that had not been approved for human consumption. Test plots of the rice, LL601, were grown by the Louisiana State University Agriculture Station at Crowley, Louisiana, in what was thought to be an isolated situation. The GMO rice in some way found its way into the commercial rice crops and caused a significant price downturn in 2006. Rice farmers in the five above mentioned states suffered financial losses for 2006 and, in some cases later years because the U.S.D.A. required some lands to remain fallow for a year to 18 months in an effort to mitigate the spread of the contamination.
The firm represents a number of the rice farmers in Louisiana and Arkansas to recover their financial losses. A Multi District Litigation is proceeding in Federal District Court in St. Louis, Missouri, along with numerous state court proceedings by individual rice producers. The defendants are various A.G. Bayer Companies, Louisiana State University, and Riceland, an Arkansas rice dealer.
